Three weapons — know which is which

1 · Deduction

Shrinks your business profit before anything else. Rent for your trading setup, platform fees, commissions. Only available against business income — this is why traders file Form B.

2 · Relief

Shrinks your taxable income after profit is computed. EPF, SSPN, lifestyle, medical. Available to everyone — but you must actually spend/contribute in the year, and keep proof.

3 · Rebate

Shrinks the tax bill itself, ringgit for ringgit. The main one is zakat paid (Muslim taxpayers). Rare — most of your game is weapons 1 and 2.

Golden rule: a relief or deduction is worth its amount × your marginal rate. RM8,000 of SSPN relief at the 24% band = RM1,920 of tax saved. The higher your income, the more each relief is worth — which is why these moves matter most in your best years.

The highest-value hour of your year

The three money moves (do them before 31 December)

1 · EPF voluntary top-up — up to RM4,000 relief

  • Contribute via the KWSP i-Akaun app (self-contribution / i-Saraan). Takes minutes.
  • Your Pomet EPF already uses part of the RM4,000 — top up only the gap to RM4,000 total.
  • The money is locked until retirement (with the usual EPF withdrawal rules) — that's the trade. Only top up cash you won't need.

2 · SSPN deposit — up to RM8,000 relief

  • Open an SSPN Prime account (PTPTN) for your child — or, if no child, this one isn't available to you; skip to PRS.
  • Relief is on net deposits: deposit RM8,000, withdraw nothing that year.
  • Deposit must land before 31 Dec of the tax year. January is too late.

3 · PRS contribution — up to RM3,000 relief

  • Contribute to any approved PRS fund (via the PPA portal or fund providers) before 31 Dec.
  • Locked until age 55 for the tax-efficient portion — treat it as retirement money, not savings.

Reality check: these moves convert taxable cash into locked savings. They're worth it when you have surplus cash in a high-income year. Never borrow to fund a relief — the interest eats the saving.

Weapon 1 · The trader's list

Business deductions — claim everything real

The test (Section 33): the cost must be wholly and exclusively incurred to produce the income. If a cost is part-personal, claim the business share and keep a note of how you split it.

Claim it

  • Brokerage commissions, exchange and clearing fees
  • Platform & data: TradingView, terminals, news services
  • AI subscriptions (ChatGPT / Claude / Muse) — trading share
  • VPS / cloud servers for bots and remote trading
  • Internet and mobile — apportioned to trading use
  • Home office — rent/utilities share by floor area or usage
  • Trading courses, books, coaching — for this business
  • Tax agent and accounting fees for the trading books
  • Bank and wire fees on broker transfers
  • Interest on money borrowed to trade (e.g. margin interest)
  • SSM registration and business licences

Never claim it

  • Your own drawings / "salary" to yourself (sole prop)
  • Capital deposited into the broker
  • Trading losses on positions still open
  • Personal living costs, family expenses
  • Fines, penalties, late-payment charges
  • Income tax itself, CP500 instalments
  • Anything without a receipt or statement
  • The same cost twice (e.g. in both IGS and trading)

How apportionment works (the part people skip)

Internet bill RM200/month, used ~70% for trading → claim RM140/month = RM1,680/year. Write the basis in your records ("home fibre, trading desk is primary use, 70%"). A reviewer who can follow your logic accepts it; a round 100% claim on a shared home bill invites questions.

Equipment

Capital allowances — gear is claimed over years, not day one

Equipment isn't deducted in one go (except small items). You claim an initial allowance (IA) in the purchase year plus an annual allowance (AA) each year, on the declining balance.

AssetInitialAnnualExample: RM5,000 item
Computers / ICT equipment20%40%Year 1: RM3,000 · Year 2: RM2,000 · done
General plant & machinery20%14%Claimed over ~6 years
Motor vehicles20%20%Capped at RM100k cost (RM50k if used)
Furniture & office equipment20%10%Claimed over ~8 years
Small-value assets (each ≤ RM2,000)100% in year 1Total cap RM20,000 per year — monitors, chairs, peripherals

Trader translation: a RM4,999 PC claims RM2,999 in year 1 and RM2,000 in year 2. Two RM1,800 monitors claim fully in year 1 as small-value assets. Timing a gear purchase before 31 Dec starts the allowance clock a year earlier.

When matters, not just what

Timing plays

  • Harvest losses before 31 Dec. Closing a losing position in December cuts this year's tax. The same close in January only helps next year. Only harvest losses you'd close anyway — never distort a trade for tax.
  • Defer a big gain into a quiet year. If next year you'll earn less (job change, sabbatical), a winner closed in January is taxed at lower bands than one closed in December of a fat year. Genuine timing is legal.
  • Bunch your reliefs into fat years. EPF/SSPN/PRS top-ups are worth 24–28% in a big year, 8–11% in a thin one. In a thin year, let the caps go unused rather than locking cash cheaply.
  • CP500 is an estimate, not a sentence. Income dropped? File CP502 by 30 June to cut instalments. Don't prepay tax on profits that no longer exist.
  • Use the losing year fully. A business loss offsets salary this year first — then carries forward up to 10 years. Declare it even if tax payable is zero; an undeclared loss can't be carried.
The rhythm

Action calendar

Every month (30 minutes)

  • Export broker statement → update trade log → convert at BNM rates
  • File every expense receipt into the year's folder
  • Top up the tax reserve (your marginal rate % of the month's net profit)

Every December (the money month)

  • Estimate the year's net profit and marginal band
  • EPF top-up to RM4,000 total · SSPN net deposit · PRS RM3,000 — all before 31 Dec
  • Buy planned gear before 31 Dec to start capital allowances
  • Harvest genuine losses; consider deferring big winners to January
  • Pay any outstanding business invoices so the cost lands this year

Jan – Jul (filing season)

  • January: reconcile the full year; build the tax computation
  • Collect your EA form from your employer (by 28 Feb)
  • 1 March: e-Filing opens — file Form B on MyTax, pay the balance from the reserve
  • 15 July: Form B deadline. Diary the CP500 dates when the notice arrives
  • 30 June: CP502 deadline if next year's income needs revising down
Proof it matters

Don't cross these

Red lines

  • Section 140: LHDN can disregard artificial or fictitious transactions. If a "cost" wouldn't exist without the tax benefit, it doesn't count.
  • Fake or inflated receipts = fraud, not planning. Penalties up to 100% of tax undercharged, fines to RM20,000, up to 6 months' jail for filing failures.
  • Nominee games (parking income with family who didn't earn it) get unwound and penalised.
  • Voluntary disclosure beats discovery: if you under-declared a past year, disclosing before any audit carries a much lower penalty (15%) than being caught (up to 100%).
